We addressed a crowd of about 80 students at FAPS this year. They gave us the chance to talk o the 12th Graders. The response was good - students asked lots of questions. All four of us who went for the visit presented. It is interesting to see that every year, the response we get is better - a clear shift from the usual 'engineering is the way to go' mindset that plagues most Indian schools. Students this year appear to be much more familiar with the SMU brand. We did, however, get asked a question or two on how to apply to NUS and NTU!
We didn't have a projector, but we still managed to do a decent job. Varun was nice enough to put up the fee structure on the board - the fee structure is something that must always be emphasized upon - Indian students in particular are very concerned about it. We were also asked questions about the MBA program. We should, probably, tell thim a bit about the MBA. Some of them already seem to have decided what they're going to do after their 12th grade but are thinking about looking SMU-ward for their MBAs. Another thing we need to provide students with is an estimate of the kind of living expenses there are in Singapore, and a break-up of living expenditure. Several of them ask, and we do not have standardized answers to give them. Also, we ran out of brocheurs as usual (we really should have more of them in stock!)
The principal seemed happy to have us over, and we told him we would follow up with another visit again soon - either in December or in August the following year. We're hoping to hear from at least some of the students who seemed very keen on applying and took our name cards to get in touch with us later.
